Mason Ho absolutely rips… There’s no denying that.. He creates speed from nowhere, chucks the tail around like I don’t know what and is more than comfortable in the air.. one thing’s for sure, the boy knows how to have fun!
This is his first pro model, built by Matt Biolos and with a lot of input from Mason to have it how he likes to surf.. Loads of drive but allowing for quick turns and looseness in the tail. To achieve this there is a low nose rocker, relaxed rocker through the centre but with more kick in the tail rocker.
On the bottom, the Voodoo Child has a cutting edge, high performance set up. There is a generous single into double concave, with the deepest concave out towards your back foot. This helps to generate speed and to allow tight radius carves yet still letting the tail to release under control. There is also a noticeable bump/hip coming into the wide squash tail. This encourages fast, angular surfing with a firm nod towards some classic shapes of the late 80’s.
There’s a slight double concave built into the deck of the board. This is for Mason to lock his rear foot in the board, (he prefers not to use a deck pad). Another addition under request from Mason was the “beak” on the deck right at the nose. This actually helps to carry a bit of volume forward into the nose to aid momentum, paddle power and to strengthen the nose.
The rails are forgiving, full and soft throughout the board, with foiled rails towards the last 12″ of the tail… allowing more volume to be retained under the rear foot for stability.
Matt says about the Voodoo Child:-
“All in all, the elements combine to not only make a creative expression of Masons concepts and interests, but they balance out into an easy to ride, generously proportioned all around short board with post modern and retro chick influences.”
